Project Overview

Alternative Heat were appointed as Detailed Designer and Plantroom Contractor to deliver a fully prefabricated Community Heat Hub (CHH) and District Heat Network (DHN) serving 1,050 new homes, a school and commercial buildings. The project replaces gas heating with high-efficiency ASHP technology, achieving significant carbon reduction and providing a resilient 24/7 heat supply.

Using our 30,000m² off-site manufacturing facility, the entire containerised energy centre—including M&E systems, BMS, distribution pumps and backup electric boilers—was prefabricated, factory-tested and delivered to site. This reduced on-site programme duration, improved quality assurance and minimised carbon emissions from construction logistics.

The heating system comprises 2 × 600kW ASHPs, supported by 4 × electric boilers (3 × 700kW + 1 × 500kW) delivering 75–85°C LTHW into dual thermal stores, with 60–65°C network flow temperature.

We utilised 3D Revit modelling from concept through to completion (LOD 350), enabling spatial coordination, clash detection and seamless integration with the wider design team. This accelerated decision-making, reduced rework and ensured efficient off-site fabrication.

Robust project controls were implemented throughout, including risk management, weekly progress reporting, document governance through Viewpoint CDE and digital QA inspections using Field View, ensuring programme certainty and compliance with CDM 2015 and our ISO-accredited IMS (9001, 14001, 45001).
