Project Overview

Tay Cities Innovation Hub at the University of Dundee is a new build facility. This project formed part of the Tay Cities Biomedical Cluster and a vision to create innovation led growth through new company formations, inward investment, sustainable jobs and new training opportunities.

Alternative Heat were engaged to provide the full design, build, install and commissioning services to deliver a pre-fabricated energy centre to house a closed-loop ground sourced heat pump system to provide full space heating, cooling and domestic hot water for the site.

Alternative Heat prefabricated Energy centre solution contained:

  • 2No. 300kW Ground source heat pump units to provide LTHW and chilled water
  • 1No. c.100kW Ground source heat pump to provide domestic hot water
  • geo-exchange pump sets
  • circulation pumps
  • buffer vessels
  • Building management system (BMS) package
  • Full M&E fitout

Energy Centre was constructed as 2No. 4.0m x 12m x 4.1m modules, allowing for simplified transport and offloading/positioning on site whilst ensuring finished energy centre layout provided optimum mechanical and electrical layout and adequate space provision for maintenance and future plant replacement.

The Energy Centre underwent extensive quality assurance checks (in line with our ISO 9001 quality systems) throughout fabrication to include structural verification of weld checks, paint depth checks etc. fitout to verify all components were as agreed technical submittals and installed as per manufacturer / legislative requirements, and finally extensive commissioning and testing of all services prior to dispatch. This provided a final product which was defect free, completed to high, consistent quality, and in full compliance to agreed specification.
