Scope

Mechanical fit-out of the Jodrell Basement plantroom, including district pipework repairs, prefabricated plant skid installation and associated upgrades to heating, pumping and domestic hot water systems.


Project Overview

Following the successful delivery of the Jodrell Laboratories and Melon Yard Decarbonisation Project, Alternative Heat Ltd were appointed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, to undertake a further phase of works focused on the Jodrell Basement plantroom.

This phase formed part of the wider optimisation and resilience strategy for the site, addressing existing pipework condition, improving system performance and completing the mechanical fit-out to support the newly installed low-carbon heating infrastructure.

Works were undertaken within a constrained basement environment and carefully sequenced to maintain continuity of heating services throughout the changeover period.

Scope of Works

Plantroom & District Pipework

  • District pipework survey, repairs and leak testing
  • Strip-out of existing low-level pipework within the Jodrell Basement plantroom
  • Design, supply and installation of a prefabricated plant skid, including new heating header pipework and pump sets
  • Connection to incoming district pipework and tie-in to existing high-level services
  • Temporary boiler changeover to maintain heating continuity
  • Resealing of plantroom openings and associated making good
  • CAD design and as-built drawings
  • Offsite pressure testing and onsite leak testing

Mechanical Fit-Out

  • New plate heat exchanger serving FCU systems
  • Duplex variable speed pump sets
  • Grundfos pressurisation unit f0r secondary side of the plate heat exchanger
  • X-Pot side stream filtration unit and dosing pot
  • New 1,400 litre Megaflow Calorifier, complete with immersion heater and hot water return pumps
  • Installation of 4No. Picv control valves
  • Phenolic foam insulation with foil-faced finish, including PHE and valve jackets
  • Filling, flushing and water treatment of new plantroom pipework
  • Supply and installation of an industry safety cage for the new plantroom equipment
  • Full commissioning of all installed plant ad systems
