Scope

Design and installation of rooftop solar PV systems across two live leisure centres, with low-carbon upgrades at Abbey Stadium.

Project Overview

In early 2025, Alternative Heat Limited was appointed as Principal Contractor to deliver rooftop solar PV installations at two major public leisure facilities: Abbey Stadium in Redditch and Bromsgrove Sports & Leisure Centre. The works were delivered as part of wider local authority sustainability initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, lower energy costs and improve long-term energy resilience across public infrastructure.

Both projects were completed within live operational environments and delivered to a challenging programme, requiring careful planning and phased installation to ensure minimal disruption to day-to-day activities.

At Abbey Stadium, the solar PV installation is projected to generate 29.65 MWh of electricity annually, offsetting approximately 5.73 tonnes of CO₂ per year, equivalent to planting 263 trees annually. In addition to the PV works, the site also benefited from targeted low-carbon heating and domestic hot water upgrades to further improve energy efficiency and system resilience.

At Bromsgrove Sports & Leisure Centre, the installed solar PV system is projected to reduce site energy usage by a minimum of 65,080 kWh per year, delivering an estimated 14.34 tonnes of CO₂ savings annually, equivalent to 659 trees planted each year. The installation improves energy independence and reduces reliance on grid electricity for this high-demand leisure facility.

Scope of Works

Solar PV – Both Sites

  • Design and installation of rooftop solar PV systems across two live leisure centres

  • Total installed capacity of 108 kWp

  • Abbey Stadium: 30.24 kWp flat roof system using JA Solar 420 W modules

  • Bromsgrove Sports & Leisure Centre: 78.30 kWp system across two buildings using JA Solar 445 W modules

  • SolarEdge inverter technology with panel-level optimisation and monitoring

  • Roof-specific mounting solutions accounting for wind and snow loading

  • Full testing, commissioning and handover

Low-Carbon Heating & DHW – Abbey Stadium Only

  • Installation of 2No. 16 kW Panasonic T-CAP air source heat pumps, roof mounted

  • Removal of legacy solar thermal equipment

  • Replacement of existing calorifiers with 2No. 500 L DHW vessels, complete with immersion backup

  • Integration with existing building services and controls

  • Full commissioning and system optimisation

Project Outcome

The project successfully delivered high-impact renewable energy and low-carbon heating solutions within an accelerated 8-week programme, enhancing sustainability credentials, reducing operational energy costs and supporting long-term decarbonisation objectives across both leisure facilities.
