Project Overview

Alternative Heat were engaged by Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust to design and deliver a zero carbon ASHP heating solution to replace an end-of-life gas installation at Langley House Stroke Rehabilitation Centre.

A key objective for this project is to assist the trust to reduce Its carbon emissions and ensure a better health for future generations as outlined in its ‘CLCH Green Plan’. This plan aligns to support the NHS England ‘For a greener NHS Programme’& Net Zero NHS Plan’, which targets a net zero ‘NHS Carbon Footprint’ by 2040 and a net zero ‘NHS Carbon Footprint Plus’ by 2045.

Alternative Heat undertook full design responsibility for the sizing of the ASHP solution, for this we undertook full building heatload modelling including analysis of building fabric performance, historic utility consumption profile, and review of energy saving opportunities.

Finalised scope of works included:

Plantroom / Heat Generation:

  • 5No. 44 kW RHOSS Poker ASHP modules in cascade to provide full LTHW and DHW provision
  • ASHP external compound and acoustic shrouding
  • Plantroom install to include full primary mechanical installation (pumps, water treatment, expansion etc)
  • Strip out and environmental disposal of end-of-life plantroom systems and fossil fuel boilers
  • Upgrade to current Building Management System panel and controls philosophies
  • Replacement of electrical distribution panels and integration of ASHP supply circuits

Electrical System:

  • DNO upgrade to increase MIC to include application and site civils
  • Site-wide electrical distribution upgrades

LTHW Distribution System:

  • Efficiency upgrades to distribution pipework and removal of low loss header to reduce energy usage
  • Replacement of existing single speed pumps on heating circuits to higher efficiency variable inverter units which also permit greater control and modulation.
  • Inclusion of PIC valves on primary circuits to maintain design flow/return temperature delta and increase efficiency though reduced system losses
  • UFH controls upgrades to optimise system efficiency and permit enhanced control through BMS and temperature zoning via remote monitoring of average air temperatures.
  • Replacement of existing UFH 3-port valves with 2-port valves controlled from BMS to close when heating demand is satisfied to maintain design flow/return temperature delta

Alternative Heat liaised with the client in the design and approval of a detailed project programme which incorporated all key project deliverables, phased milestones and requirement for intrusive works and planned shutdowns within the site.

Strict programme compliance ensured all works within live areas and/or with potential disruption to site operation and patient experience notified to client as per agreed communication schedules and managed effectively to have no negative impact on core site operation.

It was imperative to maintain continuity of heating and electrical supply within a live healthcare facility such as Langley House which operates 24/7 with high risk, vulnerable patients. To ensure full N+1 supply was maintained throughout project duration we provided temporary electrical generators and temporary LTHW plantroom facilities. Both electrical and LTHW backup generation systems were sized to accommodate 120% of peak loads and directly integrated within existing site infrastructure to ensure full uninterrupted supply throughout project delivery, commissioning and run testing phases.
