Fettes College is a leading co-educational boarding and day school for children aged 7 - 18. Uniquely situated in extensive grounds and woodland close to the heart of Edinburgh, Fettes has reputation for excellent academic results, the highest levels of pastoral care and a proud sporting tradition.
The new £12m teaching block entailed a phased program of works commencing with the refurbishment of the existing 1950's built north building and concluding of a 270 seat auditorium on the site of the old gymnasium. Alternative Heat were appointed to design, supply, install and commission a Geothermal Heat Pump system consisting of 2,800m of vertical bore hole linked to a 120kW heat pump system for the new teaching blocks.
As part of its heating upgrade, we designed the new Ground Source Heat Pump system to serve Phase 1 of the college and supplied and installed 2No. IDM Energie Terra Max 400V heat pumps connected to a 2,500L buffer tank. The bore hole array was modelled via our GLD software to enable us to demonstrate the ground temperatues throughout a 25 and 50 year operation. The bore hole array was sized to ensure minimum ground temperatures did not drop below 0 degrees in order to maximise the seasonal COP from the system.
